In my experience of opening the doors (or not!) hundreds of times, it has become clear to me that the right answer is never unusual or technical.

Even the history and mythology is mostly of the general knowledge sort or easily looked up.

Anything that comes from the backwaters of the dictionary seems always best left there.

In my forthcoming "Memoirs of a Gatekeeper", I will be mentioning COGERA, INCROSS and THEOPHANY as examples that have cropped up.

Subsequent examples include: CHARIOTED, PUNSTER, LATINESCE, PYTHONESS, UNQUEEN, CHORINE...

Do you have any of these plausible-but-wrong examples of our own?

ROFL, well, that saves me an email - was debating whether Theophany was a word
(ok, so I'd dismissed it already, but just amused to see it mentioned!)

IDOLATERS had me going for a while.

COGERA still makes a terrible sort of sense, even though I have now seen the light. The really really scary thing was that another Runite had come to the same conclusion independently. Fools seldom differ.

And as for OBSOLETE...

I'll admit, the best/worst one I've come up with is ANNULUS. Which is a word, and which does fit with NERO in a sick sort of way. And, even better, they fit with the top keyword. This puzzle is intertwined though isn't it. Even though I knew that couldn't be it, that's all I could think of when I came up with that wrong key word.

Phoenician springs to mind, altho its not too weird it was wrong for that page. Does anyone else find that they get a word into their mind and until they've proved it wrong they can't get past it?

Yes, Theophany :D :D :D Had to get rid of it down the proper channels before anything else would appear.

I'd forgotten THEOPHANY. I had that as well. But at least I knew it was wrong and didn't submit it :)

I also own to THEOPHANY. I cannot imagine why it so appealed to me :)

Errr... isn't it a medieval form rather than a classical one?

Is that the reason COGERA doesn't work!?! I was convinced that was a good word. Darn that Chaucer on the first page! He has runed this puzzle for me more than once!

Scurra has said this should join this list (personally I thought it was one of my saner guesses)

I sent Rosetta Stone to the Gatekeeper for the Source Trail
