I stole this phrase from Scurra. I think its brilliant.

As we have worked through the pages there must be many amongst us who have howled at our own stupidity. I decided to share mine in order to lighten the atmosphere when the going gets tough.

My trying to do a letter sudoku on a number grid after having wondered for at least 5 mins why I couldn't get started.

And I'm sure Scurra wont mind my inclusion of his as he's posted it elsewhere:

Counting the letters around the border for half an hour on the wrong page.

Who else has a howler and are you brave enough to post it?

How about not being able to tell the difference between a crystal ball and a cauldron? .

I was sure I had the right letter but it didn't fit. I am loathe to say how long it was before I noticed.

I'm sure I won't do that again.

Counting on the correct page (unlike Scurra), but blue then red. Not once. Not twice. Yes. Thrice. Waking up in the small hours of the morning and writing RED THEN BLUE on the note pad next to my bed.

Yes. I am that sad.

Counting on the correct page, with the correct numbers, knowing which was red and which was blue, and then (repeatedly) starting from the wrong symbol.

That is particularly fine, Jupiter. And almost impossible to spot while you are doing it!

Well I notice the Womble hasn't 'fessed up to anything yet.
But I'm sure he's never made any embarrassing mistakes...

[What I want to know is why, when there are eight ways to get to the keyword, it invariably takes you five or six to hit the right one - assuming that everything else is fine, of course. Why couldn't I ever find it on my first go?!]

I'm with Scurra here. It's like looking for that important piece of paper etc. It is always found near, or at, the bottom of the pile. WHY?????

OK, Scurra, here's the list:
Page 1: Refusal to accept Apollo as top word because the Parthenon is devoted to Athena. Wildly inaccurate assumption about the text below the Parthenon picture (which bit me really badly later).
Page 3: Rash decision about the (rather rare) word FESTAL. Long agonising about whether the rodent is a mouse or a rat.
Page 4: Desperately embarrassing blind spot, which by great good fortune involves a massive spoiler. :)
Page 5: DUSTY. What more can I say?
Page 7: I may still not have seen the character set without Scurra's help.
Page 8: Doing the sum right but writing down the wrong Roman numeral. Complete deadlock on the Circular Tour. Escaped only after a hefty kicking from redjimmy.
Page 9: Another character set that foxed me. This time Oracle was my rescuer.
Page 10: Yet more character set blindness. Thanks, Gill.
Page 11: Four, count 'em, FOUR attempts at the top word starting with DIAL. Complete inability to see "mm in m" until my nephew looked at it and said "oh, yes" immediately. Wierdly, that triggered my own epiphany.
Page 12: My interpretation of the dial text was just wrong enough to delay me for days.
Hereafter the howlers are too spoiler-laden, which is a relief, frankly.

Mine was Vestals at the bottom of page 5 and I was convinced until Sue got me back on track. Plus a whole host of others too numerous to mention including 2 H's in one row of a Suduko which lay undetected for a week again thanks Sue.

As I said to you before, sometimes it just takes someone to say that for it to click.

I have concluded that the motto for all our endeavours should be as follows:

The Runes: It's really, really obvious.

:D

Um, No it's not! I'm still stuck on the spelling of a month page 9. I've tried it everyway I know how to spell it and nothing clicks. Overthinking is dumb. That's my motto. Don't think and the answers come to me! with a lot of help from others on this site of course!

I must have done this 10 times, then I got smart (a miracle in itself) I highlighted the correct symbol on every page! Wow, no more wrong symbol starts.

How many times have I tried to connect the words together. I.e. top keyword, bottom keyword, babel, and knot. Only to get to the top keyword on page 14 and realize there is no way in hades that word would fit with anything!

again, Overthinking is WRONG!

Daftest thing - getting SHIT for the top word on page 15, and after the page 14 word I almost believed it. Thankfully I checked it with Gauntlet before I presented it to the Gatekeeper.

I like that one!

I've certainly done the counting blue then red one, and on one of the pages where the numbers were pretty large. GRRRRR
